WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA
Sleep Apnea:
According to the American Academy of Sleep,"Sleep apnea (AP-ne-ah) is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep."
Snoring affects nearly 90 million Americans and Sleep Apnea alone is estimated to affect 22 million Americans. It's very common and over 200,00 cases every year. It's not uncommon to find out from your partner that you snore, have difficulty breathing at night, or even stop breathing at night. Sleep Apnea can last for years or even throughout your life. It's important to assess your health and make lifestyle changes if necessary.
By treating Sleep Apnea you increase your health and receive a better night's sleep.
What are the causes and symptoms?
Many common causes of developing Sleep Apnea result from obesity and lifestyle factors. It's more common amongst men, individuals who are overweight, as well as those who have larger than a 17" neck. Pay attention to your body and notice when you are restless and exhausted during the day. This could be a sign of sleep apnea. More symptoms include: snoring, morning headaches, stop breathing at night, dry mouth or sore throat upon waking, and excessive daytime sleepiness. Your age could also be a factor. It's most common in individuals from 41 to 60+ years of age. Some may not even know, but waking up while sleeping is detrimental to one's health.
How it's treated?
Sleep Apnea is treated depending upon severity of your case. Mild to moderate sleep apnea can often times be treated with an oral appliance while more severe cases should seek medical attention and be treated with a CPAP. "CPAP" stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure that uses mild air pressure allowing the airways to stay open instead of closed. Another common use for CPAP is for preterm babies whose lungs are not fully developed to provide them with a fully supply of air.
